In review of last years BYOD initiative we found that students and teachers were more engaged in learning online than ever. The BYOD initiative at Cary High School (CHS) involves all students, teachers, parents and administrators working together to create the type of environment that provides students and staff with an atmosphere where we can develop a leading edge technologically advanced learning culture. It allows students to bring their own technology devices (laptops, smart phones, Nooks, tablets, iPads, etc.) into the classroom. These devices are to be used at the discretion of individual teachers, media specialists, and administrators to enhance lessons and learning while at Cary High. Teachers will incorporate devices at appropriate points within their lessons to build ideas, enlist creativity, grant quick access to information, and allow students Internet access to develop knowledge and collaboration in the classroom.
This school year students will see the introduction of individual WCPSS issued Google accounts which align with our BYOD environment. Student Google accounts will allow for access to everything within the Google family of tools except Gmail. Students also have a WCPSS issued email account that they will use for communication. These email accounts are linked to their Google accounts. Student Google accounts are within a WCPSS sub-domain which incorporates greater security for student access than a regular Google account. BYOD will grant students the opportunity to use their devices in the classroom using WCPSS provided tools, gather information from the Internet, collaborate with other learners, and utilize productivity tools deemed requisite by their classroom teachers, media specialists, and administrative team. This initiative is a privilege for students, not a right. It is our hope that the use of devices for social communication outside the learning requisites will be minimized. As a team we can make it work for all.
